How to Make a Small Space Feel Bigger

Text over image of small bathroom reads: How to make a small space feel bigger.

When I show videos of my home online, I often get comments from folks who can’t believe my home is just 800 square feet. And I take that as a compliment because I use a lot of tips and tricks to make my home seem larger than it is. Here’s 5 ways I make my small space feel bigger.

My record collection and mirror in my small home. The reflective surface of the mirror makes it feel bigger.

1. Use Reflective Surfaces in Small Spaces

I use reflective surfaces like mirrors to bounce light around and make my living room space seem brighter than it actually is. But I don’t limit myself to mirrors, the feet of my couch are also reflective and help make this dark space appear brighter.

If you don’t have much space on your walls, a glass or mirrored side table or reflective accessories like this fun, disco ball planter can do the trick.

Low profile and furniture with legs in this small space makes it feel bigger.

2. Low Profile Furniture Makes a Small Space Feel Bigger

Furniture that is low to the ground helps the space seem larger simply because there’s more space above the furniture. This works especially well when you have short ceilings.

3. Furniture with Exposed Legs Tricks the Eye

Speaking of furniture, I also always look for pieces with exposed legs. This tricks the eye into thinking there’s more space. Since you see more floor space, it creates an additional sense of openness.

4. Hang Curtains High and Wide To Make the Windows Feel Bigger

It’s common to see recommendations like use light paint colors and gauzy curtains to make a space feel bigger. And while that can help, it’s not always the style I like to go for. Instead, I prefer to hang my curtains high and wide, especially in those extra dark rooms, like my guest room/office. This makes the windows appear larger and doesn’t block any of the natural light.

5. Large Scale Artwork can still be used

Lastly, I’m not afraid to use large scale artwork. A gallery wall in a small space may actually make the room feel cluttered, but a large scale piece can add drama.

What tricks do you use to make a small home or room appear larger?
