How to Organize Your Home Sustainably

Organizing is all the rage right now. And I’m into it. I LOVE organizing and making my home a little more aesthetically pleasing. But I don’t love the trend of taking stuff out of plastic packaging and putting it into more (freshly purchased) plastic packaging. I get it, it looks nice, but to me, it just seems wasteful.

Lately I’ve been having some health issues and my doctor’s recommendation is to… wait (not my favorite thing to do, but ok). In the meantime, she also suggested a bevy of supplements. Starting a new habit is always hard, but as someone with ADHD, new habits seem almost impossible. I have to literally see something every single day or doesn’t exist for me. (It’s called object permanence and it’s a fun thing to have when you also hate seeing “junk.” 😆)

I currently have all my supplements out on the counter, so I remember to make myself a smoothie and take my vitamins everyday. But all the different branding and colors and logos was displeasing to my eyeballs. So, I rooted through my cabinets for jars, used a label maker from my librarian days and stacked everything on a cheese board I already had. And I feel 100% better about it.

(For the original plastic containers the supplements came in, I peeled off the labels and I’ll be using the containers in the garden. I also took a picture of the back of the old containers in case I need to refer to the labels in the future.)

If you’re looking to organize a cabinet or drawer, I’d encourage you to see what you have first. We own so much more than we think we do. I also love saving the sauce jars from ALDI for organizing. (They have measurement indicators on the side!) And if you truly need something, check your local Buy Nothing Group or thrift store. I see jars and organizational tools almost every time I go!

What’s your favorite way to organize sustainably?
