Spring Home Maintenance Checklist

Home maintenance to do in the spring

Spring is one of the most labor-intensive times to own a home. There’s so much to do! Your yard is springing into bloom and there’s a lot to clean up from those harsh winter months. But never fear! This home maintenance checklist will help keep you on-track and keep your home looking beautiful.

Spring Home Maintenance Tasks

Indoor Home Maintenance Tasks

  1. Check smoke detectors
Check your smoke detectors twice a year. I do it on both the fall and spring equinox.
  2. Check/replace HVAC filters
Check your HVAC filters monthly, but you may not have to replace them each month. Be sure to keep on top of changing your HVAC filters in the spring. Allergens are on the way!
  3. Clean ceiling fans & light fixtures
Don’t forget about dusting those ceiling fans and light fixtures. You’ll need those fans soon and you don’t want them blowing dust everywhere.
  4. Clean carpets & rugs
Your rugs and carpets took a beating over the winter. Now is the time to clean carpets and rugs. Your home will thank you.
  5. Deep clean kitchen appliances
Similarly, kitchen appliances like your stove, fridge and microwave could all use a deep clean too.
  6. Clean and disinfect light switches & doorknobs
Light switches and doorknobs are often overlooked. Keep them clean and disinfected for your loved ones.
  7. Clean windows inside
Cleaning your windows is an instant mood-booster. You don’t realize how dirty they are until they’re clean!
  8. Clean indoor garbage can
Although, you may change your trash bags often, how often do you clean your indoor garbage can? Get in there and get out that sticky goo! Yuck!

Outdoor Home Maintenance Tasks

  1. Fertilize and/or reseed lawn
During late May or early June, before the heat of summer kicks in, fertilize your lawn to ensure your grass will make it through those hot summer months. You may want to consider organic fertilizers that won’t harm the waste stream.
  2. Apply new mulch to outdoor beds
It’s amazing how much new mulch improves the look of your outdoor beds and yard. It’ll also help keep the weeds from popping through this spring.
  3. Clean patio furniture
Even if you kept your patio furniture inside over the winter, it still may be dusty and dull. Scrub up that furniture now so you can enjoy it all spring and summer long.
  4. Clean windows outside
After the harsh winter months, your windows are probably looking dull and dusty. It’s amazing what a good scrubbing can do.
  5. Power wash siding
Winter buildup can lead to mold and mildew growth on siding surfaces. Power washing removes that buildup. Ultimately, it helps prevent mold and mildew from spreading and causing damage to your home’s exterior.
  6. Put up screens in windows, outdoor lights & other items stored for winter
Now is the time to dust off your items stored for winter. This is one of my favorite tasks! I love getting out my solar string lights and dusting off my pots in preparation for planting.

Additional Outdoor Home Maintenance Tasks

  1. Service air conditioner
Now is the time to service your air conditioner! You don’t want to get caught sweating on the first hot day of the year because your air conditioner was in out-of-order.
  2. Inspect the roof
Detection and prevention of roof leaks is key to home ownership and your wallet will thank you too. Detecting and repairing any damage early can prevent leaks from developing. Spring roof inspections help identify potential problem areas before they escalate.
  3. Clean outdoor garbage cans
When’s the last time you cleaned your outdoor garbage cans? 🤢 This is your sign to clean them now!
  4. Pest & mosquito prevention
With warm weather comes pests and mosquitos. Be sure to get rid of any standing water and treat for pests before they make their way into your home.
  5. Refresh paint & stain on decks, porches & outdoor items
A new lick of paint or stain does wonders for your home. It instantly adds curb appeal and helps work as a protective barrier against moisture, UV rays, wind, and other environmental factors that can damage your home’s exterior.

Your tasks may vary depending on where you live and what kind of house you own. But, there’s room on the bottom of the list for you to write in additional tasks.
