One Room Challenge Week 3: Getting Down and Dirty

A Small Life

First, I want to say thank you to everyone who voted for me in the Domino Magazine’s Design Blog awards in the Small Spaces Category I won! I can’t believe it! Next week, I’ll be flying to Chicago to go to the awards party. Be sure to follow along on my Instagram for real-time updates.

Onto the One Room Challenge update for Week 3! We’ve had a decent amount of good weather this past week, like more than one good day (I wish I was kidding!), so I’ve been able to get a reasonable amount done on the house.

Painting foundation

First, I painted the foundation. You can see in the picture above the contrast between the black (new) and the grey (old) foundation color. This task was not easy. I ended up painting most of it with a brush because the concrete blocks are pitted and a roller was not getting into the itty bitty indentations.

But I will say, wowie! Right? What a difference! I love the black and I think it really grounds the house and gives it some much needed contrast. To see the before pictures, check out Week 1 or Week 2.

Sanding the porch roof

George volunteered to help me sand the porch roof since my shoulder has been all out of whack. He rigged up a genius broom/sander combo.

Porch furniture before

I also lightly sanded and I’m currently working on painting the porch furniture. (Bambi isn’t helping. Haha!) The above picture is the “before.” We painted the furniture probably about 6 years or so ago. It wasn’t in horrible shape, but it needed to be touched up and I’ll be repainting the blue squares to, you guessed it, black!

Be sure to check out the other guest participating in the One Room Challenge here. And the designers here. Send good weather and good travel vibes my way! And thank you again to anyone and everyone that voted for me! This very-well may be the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to me!

Hey Melissa! So cute! We think Bambi is a rat terrier/chihuahua– but we’re not 100% sure since we adopted her from a shelter.
