Last week in a FB group I’m in (shoutout to Yes and Yes Blog’s Money + Happy group), someone asked how to make thrifted items look cohesive in a space. I, of course, was raising my hand enthusiastically to help! Here’s some of my best tips…
- Have a strong POV
Most folks have eclectic taste. We like a bunch of different styles and that’s ok! But an eclectic style can be very hard to pull off. IMO, it’s actually the hardest style to emulate well. To help determine your POV, make a Pinterest board of rooms that you like and look for themes. Then, edit it down to your favorites and determine the common thread between the photos. (Think about color, style, shape and “feeling.”)
For example, I actually love both “cottage core” and “modern” spaces. And they seem to be the exact opposite ends of the spectrum. But when I think about it, what I really love about “cottage core” is the old wood and the layered textiles. And what I really love about “modern” is the white walls and the clean lines.
AND when I think about it that way, the two styles aren’t really that far off. In fact, I often see those aspects of each style in “industrial” spaces. 🤯 - Don’t buy something if it doesn’t fit your POV.
It’s so, so tempting to buy things when it’s a good deal. I know, I thrift shop often. To avoid overbuying, I make a list of things I genuinely need for my home. If it’s not on the list and doesn’t fit my POV, I don’t buy it. Even if it’s a good deal. - Color can help things that you already own look more cohesive
One of my favorite tips to make thrifted or hand-me-down items look more cohesive is paint. By changing the color of the item, you can take mismatched furniture, frames or decor and give them a common theme. (I did this with the lamp in the picture above!) - Don’t be afraid to edit and switch things up
Sometimes you will make a mistake or an item—although you’ve tried to make it work— just won’t work. That’s ok. It happens! No need to feel guilty about it. Sell it or give it away sustainably. - And if you’re still stumped, ask for help!
Do you have a stylish friend with a beautiful home? I guarantee they would love to help! If you don’t have that stylish friend, I’d love to be her! I often help my coaching clients determine their theme and make their small space work for them. And I ALWAYS think about sustainability, using what you already have and thrifted items. Send me an email, if you want to chat.
Great tips Melanie, thank you! You can also have a kind of “cabinet de curiosité” room where you put everything ahah
That’s a fun idea!
