We finally completed the guest room and it feels good! Well… to be honest, “Guest room” is kind of a loose term. Our guest room rarely functions like a guest room. We use it to store stuff for our business, pack orders and take pictures. So, it needed it to be light and bright, have good storage, and function as a room for the rare guest.
First, let’s take a trip down memory lane, shall we?
This is what the guest bedroom looked like when we first bought the house. It was a total mess. We ended up tearing out all of the drywall out of our entire house, including the ceiling, putting in new insulation, new drywall, new trim, new doors and refinishing the floors in the whole house. Although you might not be able to tell from these pictures, it was a hell of a lot of work.
We finished the majority of the project well over a year ago, but it’s been slow going since then, so finishing up this room felt good. We’ve also been on a major budget for the house, so I mostly used things we already had to create a fun, inviting space.
We chose this pull-out daybed from Ikea a while ago for this room. It’s convenient because if you have one guest, you can keep it as a twin, but if you have two guests, the bed converts into a double. Unlike a lot of other daybeds, it also allows for under-bed storage which we need for our business. I needed this room to be light and bright since we take photos for our business in there, but I also wanted it to be fun. So, I kept the walls white and hung up these dramatic curtains from Ikea. I’m loving this marigold color right now.
I’m also happy to have a place to hang up some of George’s art. He’s so talented and I love the sunset colors in this painting he did.
I shopped our house a lot for this project. Of course, I had bought all this stuff previously, but I’m glad to use things I already own. And that means when finishing this project, I only spent money on the DIY wall art (below). And if I’m being totally honest, I used Lowe’s gift cards that I had received for Christmas, so I didn’t spend anything at all!
Speaking of the art, this statement wood piece is the show-stealer. I had tried to paint a mural on this wall and utterly failed. But sometimes failure leads to even better ideas! I wanted a Mondrian-inspired piece and used different sizes and shapes of wood to create this tactile, statement art. (If you’re interested in a DIY tutorial, let me know and I can write one!) I love how original it is and I think it adds some much-needed color and fun to the room.
This dresser was in George’s uncle’s basement and I just painted the top and added new handles and it looks like a brand-new lady! We use it to store envelopes, tape and other shipping accoutrements.
I’ve linked the sources below in case you have questions about any specific items. If I’ve left anything out, feel free to comment below. But the real question is… who is going to be my first guest?!?!
