How To Keep Pets Safe While Living in a RV

How to keep pets safe while living in an RV

Although, we no longer live in an Airstream, I still get lots of questions about how we did it. And I love it. I still love talking about it. Many of the questions can be answered by purchasing my book, available here. But one question I did not answer in the book was “How do I keep my pets safe while living in a RV?”

I’ve responded to this question many times via email, but I decided it might be a good idea to go ahead and post my infinite wisdom šŸ˜‰ here, so it’s available to everyone. Here goes:

The main concerns of folks revolved around the temperature of the Airstream and leaving their pets home alone. And I totally understand. My dog means the world to me and I don’t ever want her to be in danger.

But, we didnā€™t really have a problem with the Airstream getting too hot or the AC shutting off. We did replace the AC unit, so it was new. In fact, sometimes it even got too cold with the AC on and Iā€™d turn off the air for a while. We live in North Carolina and it gets pretty hot here.

I would think that itā€™s pretty unlikely that you would lose electricity or the AC/heat would go out while you are gone. We lived in the Airstream through several years and several natural disasters and still only lost power a handful of times. In those instances, we were at home, although I worked a traditional job. During those times, we went to family or friendā€™s houses. If you were living in a regular home, you run the same risks. In my experience, it didnā€™t heat up or cool down too much faster than a ā€œnormalā€ house.

Hereā€™s some ideas Iā€™ve thought of to help ease your concerns:

    • If youā€™re worried about leaving your pet at home while you work, if live close to home, you could check on the dogs at lunch. If not, you could have a neighbor or friend do this.
    • If youā€™re worried about leaving your pet during errands and there are two of you, you could take them to the grocery or on whatever errand you have to do and one of you could wait in the car with the pet.
    • Park in the shade during the summer.
    • In hot weather, leave ice water for the dogs.
    • In cold weather, leave a hot water bottle and of course, plenty of blankets for snuggling.
    • If you are taking off the interior skins of the Airstream, replace the insulation.
    • If you are taking up the floor, insulate under the floor.
  • There are also alarms that let you know the temperature of your home. Thereā€™s lots of them, I havenā€™t used one, butĀ this one from RV Pet SafetyĀ looks promising.

I also wrote a post,Ā available hereĀ about how we heated and cooled the Airstream. Although the thought of a pet alone in a hot or cold RV is frightening, donā€™t let unlikely fears stand in the way of your dreams!
