I’ve responded to this question many times via email, but I decided it might be a good idea to go ahead and post my infinite wisdom š here, so it’s available to everyone. Here goes:
But, we didnāt really have a problem with the Airstream getting too hot or the AC shutting off. We did replace the AC unit, so it was new. In fact, sometimes it even got too cold with the AC on and Iād turn off the air for a while. We live in North Carolina and it gets pretty hot here.
I would think that itās pretty unlikely that you would lose electricity or the AC/heat would go out while you are gone. We lived in the Airstream through several years and several natural disasters and still only lost power a handful of times. In those instances, we were at home, although I worked a traditional job. During those times, we went to family or friendās houses. If you were living in a regular home, you run the same risks. In my experience, it didnāt heat up or cool down too much faster than a ānormalā house.
Hereās some ideas Iāve thought of to help ease your concerns:
-
- If youāre worried about leaving your pet at home while you work, if live close to home, you could check on the dogs at lunch. If not, you could have a neighbor or friend do this.
-
- If youāre worried about leaving your pet during errands and there are two of you, you could take them to the grocery or on whatever errand you have to do and one of you could wait in the car with the pet.
-
- Park in the shade during the summer.
-
- During the summer, leave aĀ battery powered fanĀ on while you are gone.
-
- In hot weather, leave ice water for the dogs.
-
- In cold weather, leave a hot water bottle and of course, plenty of blankets for snuggling.
-
- GetĀ a nanny camera.
-
- If you are taking off the interior skins of the Airstream, replace the insulation.
-
- If you are taking up the floor, insulate under the floor.
- There are also alarms that let you know the temperature of your home. Thereās lots of them, I havenāt used one, butĀ this one from RV Pet SafetyĀ looks promising.
I also wrote a post,Ā available hereĀ about how we heated and cooled the Airstream. Although the thought of a pet alone in a hot or cold RV is frightening, donāt let unlikely fears stand in the way of your dreams!
How do you ease your concerns about leaving your pet in your RV? If you have good ideas, feel free to leave āem in the comments!
