This year I am taking a few extra measures that I haven’t taken in the past. I usually plant my garden without too much forethought. It’s a fun hobby and like I learned last year, it can be a small money saver. But I have also had some flop crops and I have a feeling that my plants aren’t producing as much as they could. So this year I ordered a soil test to determine the deficiencies in my soil. I’m going to test the soil before I put the seedlings in the ground.
I’m also keeping it simple this year by sticking with plants that have done well in the past– 2 kinds of tomatoes: cherry and roma, yellow squash, zucchini squash and sweet peppers. Because I’m a wild and crazy gal, I also threw in the cactus seeds. I’ll be keeping those indoors (at least until the spring rains end). We’ll see how that goes!
I’ve also had fun with a program called Grow Veg that I found via Pinterest. It helps you get real nerdy and plan out your garden. It also reminds you via email when it’s time to plant based on your location. There’s even an app! (And a free trial, of course.) I don’t have much space to grow veggies now, but I think this program will be essential when I have a homestead. (One day!)
Once I get off work tonight, I’m starting my seeds. There, I said it. Now you have to hold me to it. 🙂
How is your garden growing this year? I’d love to chat about it in the comments!

You go girl..I suggest some herbs in pots or planters. I am amazed that several of ours thrived throughout the winter. No snow but plenty of rain. My husband transplanted about 50 strawberry plants that grew runners like crazy.Purchasing healthy looking herbs is my suggestion, thyme, basil, oregano. .Maybe build a planter to accomodate them..We were in the back yard yesterday..I will post pics when I get more weeds out of the way.No matter what you do, have fun with it..
Ps..my hubby mixes cow manure with dirt and adds compost from our pile. The earthworms love the mixture of eggshells, coffee grounds, veggie and fruit scraps, grass cuttings etc.
I love how a garden gives you a real sense of accomplishment. I say go for it! Gardening can be started any time throughout the year, just depends on what and where you are wanting to grow. There are alot of great ideas online for how to make a mini mobile greenhouse to assist in the grow process. Good luck and we can’t wait to see the photos.
