Up until recently I was under the impression that since I couldn’t keep a house plant alive, I couldn’t grow a garden. But I’ve been proving myself wrong and this is the only time I’ve been happy to be wrong.
I started peppers, tomatoes, onions and brussel sprouts from seeds. I also planted sunflowers, squash, pumpkins and cucumbers straight into the dirt. About half of my plants sprouted! I don’t want to jinx it, but I consider that a success. This is my first time really growing anything, after all. The only thing that didn’t work from my seeds was the cucumbers. My sweet father-in-law felt bad for me so this past weekend he bought me a couple of cucumber plants to start.
Only one squash plant sprouted. I still consider that a success. But my sunflowers are really the star of my garden. They are looking beau-ti-ful. All but one of the sunflowers sprouted. And my tomatoes are growing so quickly. I love checking on them each morning. It seems like they grow inches overnight!
I didn’t spend much money on this garden, but I am hopeful that it will produce and I’ll make my money back. Even if I don’t see a cornucopia of fresh veggies, I think the learning experience has been worth it. I’ll do a full cost breakdown at the end of the season and we’ll see if I’m in the red or the green (pun intended).
Did you plant a garden this year? How does your garden grow?! 🙂 Let me know in the comments!
love,
melanie
You go garden girl! It looks great! You will not regret the experience..
Thanks! I don’t regret it and I’m trying super hard!
It looks like you are.Sunflowers are fun to grow. Zucchini grows like crazy as well as crook neck squash etc. Knowing you, you will be making salsa and canning tomatoes..lol!
My squash didn’t do so well, but I’m excited about my sunflowers. Ha, ha and yes, I’d love to make salsa if my tomato plants produce!
Hi, Melanie. Just found your site yesterday and love it. Your garden looks great. If you have any seeds left over, stick them in the bare spots and try again. We too own an airstream and hope to hit the road once the sticks and bricks house sells. You have a lovely spot where yours is setup.
Carol, thanks for reading! I’ve stuck my extra seeds in bare spots, but then I tried to replant them and they didn’t do so well. It’s a learning experience!
Your garden looks great! You have inspired me to try a few veggies in pots. I don’t think the campground owners would like it if I till up a plot like yours. Lol!
You’re right, I can’t imagine they would like that very much! But veggies in pots are surprisingly easy. I’m no expert, but I think my problem in the past was from overwatering, but now I just check to see if the soil is dry before I give them a drink. Good luck!
Did you plant your squash and cucumbers in hills?
I did!
That’s an impressive surface for the first try! We used to get to choose a little spot (1m2) and then plant what we wanted in it as small kids. I mostly wanted cherry tomatos and rhubarb. Soon the tomatos ripened at a speedy pace and after a while I couldn’t keep up with it and they ended rotting on the shrub. That’s how it still goes when I garden on my own. Luckily I have help now.
Thanks, I know our veggies probably could have been bigger if we brought in more soil, but I thought we’d just try. Not too shabby!
