The Airstream Diaries: Basking in Fall

Airstream front in the fall

Fall is my favorite season. To me, nothing is better than frolicking through a field of pumpkins, drinking PSLs to my heart’s content and wrapping up in a cozy sweater. But after my beloved fall is my dreaded winter. Winter in the Airstream isn’t very fun. Winter in the Airstream means cold feet, staying next to the space heater at all times and freezing pipes.

I’ve been happy to brush the pine needles off my steps, crank up the Crockpot and on warm fall days, open up the windows. In the next few weeks we’ll need to winterize our home and pull out the heaters.

Airstream and leavesUntil then, I’m raising my PSL to you, fall. I love ya.

      Robyn,
I don’t know. We haven’t in the past. We usually just wrap the pipes and add a bit more insulation. I’m going to look into how expensive hay would be.

I’m originally an old NE girl so this information comes from experience in that climate. Often people would “bank” their homes with bails of hay for insulation and it would also prevent the wind from whipping under your airstream in turn keeping you warmer. You can usually get a lower grade of hay (called mulch hay) for much less money. For what you want to use it for the quality doesn’t matter. If you choose to try this when you “bank” your airstream make sure the bails are tight against each other and tight against the airstream. In the spring you will want to move the hay as soon as it warms up. Melanie I hope this information helps to keep you warm this winter and someday you will pay the info forward.

O My Gosh half of my message got cut off! You will still want to insulate your pipes. Some people build a insulated wooden box to fit around the pipes then hang a shop drop cord style light in the box in the on position and plug it in inside your airstream so you can turn it on, on those cold nights. The heat from the incandescent light bulb is enough heat to keep the pipes from freezing. Once again best wishes to keep warm!

Melanie, fall looks beautiful around there! I used to love fall in our shed too, sitting by the small fireplace during the storms, baking, picking up walnuts, going for walks, enjoying every bit of sunshine to the point of having picnics in big woolen jackets and scarfs. Oh, I miss a fireplace so much, that’s the only reason I can’t picture myself living in this tiny apartment forever, I don’t mind the shower in the kitchen (people coming over always mistake it for a fridge and want to put food away in it) but the fireplace..is just so important to me, more than ever in fall/winter. Maybe one day we will buy this place and install one..Hehe..don’t think so, but it would be nice!
