The Airstream Diaries: Where’s the TV?!

On the blog I don’t get asked this question much, but whenever we have relatives or friends come over to the Airstream, we always get asked “Where’s the TV?” Well, folks, when we decided to pare down everything we owned, the TV didn’t rank high on the list. I haven’t had cable television in almost 10 years and George actually grew up without cable so we’ve been doing without it for quite a while. We had a television in our apartment before (just no cable), so when we moved into the Airstream we gave it to George’s parents.

I’ve never really missed TV and if I get the urge to watch it, I’ll just head over to Hulu or use my Amazon Prime subscription to watch some of their Instant TV or movies on my computer. I’m also an incredibly boring person who doesn’t enjoy sports and would much rather watch Antiques Roadshow. That helps too when deciding to cut the cord.

I think cutting cable is a growing trend among young people. Most of my friends don’t have cable anymore either! It’s a great way to save a little bit of dough each month too!

Thinking about cutting the cord? I’ve written about it before. It’s a great way to minimize distractions and stress too! Here’s some tips on how to live without it.

Do you have a TV or cable? Let me know in the comments!

love,
melanie

Excellent post. I actually agree that more and more people are going without cable. Interesting enough I lived for about three-four years without cable. I only purchased it after buying a home because I was hosting Thanksgiving and I knew that my Uncles would get me if they couldn’t watch the Dallas Cowboys game. 🙂

Thanks for the information. I am considering cutting the cord once again. I will utilize these tips and also figure out how to watch HGTV and I will be fine.

    Thanks for sharing!

Tremaine, so happy to see your comment! Yeah, maybe after Thanksgiving you can cut the cord. Some HGTV shows are available on Hulu and on Amazon Prime. You just have to look around. Miss you all!

I’ve been thinking about canceling my cable for awhile. I keep telling myself that I can’t live without it but I know I can. Thanks for the encouragement.

My dad was shocked when I told him I didn’t pay for monthly cable! I do just fine with Netflix and my DVD collection (including TV show box sets!). I even occasionally still rent movies from the “video store.”

The only time I had cable was when I moved into a new apartment and magically got free cable for a few months. Then one day it disappeared, but I was fine without it.

Amanda, I kind of think it’s a generational thing, but some of my friends will say “What do you do for sports?!” Lucky for me, I’m not a sports fan.

No cable here for years now. Actually, in my whole life, I’ve only ever had it for just a few years. We had to get one of those digital antennas to pick up local stations. Can’t believe we’re back to using bunny ears! The only shows we watch with them are nfl football and Downton Abbey. Otherwise it’s movies we own, Amazon Prime and the PBS app. A lot of people at work have been ditching cable too. It’s such a huge unnecessary expense!

Boyfriend and I, We’ve both grown up whitout tv, and we don’t miss it. My middle sister says she doesn’t want to EVER be whitout it anymore, but the rest of us is ok. We love movies but we own four big DVD case thingies full of movies, (around 200) and now we live near a nicely stocked library and stopped spending on movies altogether.

    Hi Melanie.

Nope, I don’t have a TV in my Airstream either. I did at one time but it was never turned on so I gave it away. I don’t miss it either. Like you, if I should get the urge, I just head to the computer and get a fix or two. Actually, the laptop is the only device I use for everything: TV, radio, internet, blogging, communication. Do I miss all of that? Not one single bit! 🙂
